Corporations, the local government, and the community have joined hands to provide a sustainable solution to the issue of food-insecure children in Dong-gu, Daegu.
The 'Happy Two Meals' project is a collaborative social problem-solving framework involving businesses, local governments, citizens, and local communities aimed at sustainably resolving child hunger. Once the local government identifies children in welfare blind spots who are at risk of undernourishment, the member companies of the Happy Alliance provide resources to supply 'Happy Lunchboxes' for a designated period. Afterward, the local government ensures sustainability by integrating these children into the institutional child meal support program.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony, held at the Daegu Dong-gu Office on the 11th, was attended by Yoon Seok-jun, Head of Dong-gu Office; Jeon Seong-sik, Part Leader at Ace Nanochem; Jung Hyun-jung, CEO of the Banyawol Lotus Root Love Cooperative; Choi Kang-jong, Chairman of the Happy Lunchbox Social Cooperative; and Lim Eun-mi, Head of the Happy Alliance Secretariat (Happy Narae).
Through this agreement, Daegu Dong-gu will identify approximately 100 children in underserved areas requiring additional meal support. Ace Nanochem, a member of the Happy Alliance, will fund the budget for the Happy Lunchboxes for these children. The Banyawol Lotus Root Love Cooperative and the Happy Lunchbox Social Cooperative will collaborate on the production, delivery, and hygiene management of the meals. Upon completion of the project, Daegu Dong-gu plans to make continued efforts to resolve the food insecurity issue by integrating the supported children into its official child meal support system.
Ace Nanochem is South Korea's sole manufacturer of semiconductor abrasives (colloidal silica), significantly contributing to the localization of semiconductor materials. Following its previous initiatives to support children facing food insecurity in Sangju (North Gyeongsang Province), Seo-gu (Daegu), and Dalseo-gu (Daegu), the company—which operates a facility in Gyeongsan—is now participating in the Dong-gu 'Happy Two Meals' project, actively implementing ESG management through community engagement and mutual growth.
Cho Min-young, Director of the Happy Alliance Secretariat, stated, "While a proper meal is a fundamental right for children who are the leaders of our future, there are still many children in welfare blind spots who cannot fully enjoy this basic right." She added, "We will continue to sustainably address the challenges facing these children through the organic collaboration of companies with diverse resources, local governments, local communities, and citizens."
